TANZANIA • OCTOBER 1-10, 2024

With a reputation for producing kick-ass-over-the-top adventures, Seasick faces a chronic dilemma, “how to raise the bar”? In this case, easy. Go to Africa.

The word “Africa” resonates with anyone who seeks adventure and enjoys calculated risk. The continent’s mantra is “survival of the fittest”, but not all of Africa will produce those memorable spectacles, those heart-pumping moments, and those lasting memories that are cherished until one’s very last breath. Tanzania can. More precisely, Tanzania in October. The stats for that location and that time of year are staggering: 1.9 million flamingos, 1.2 million wildebeest, 900,000 gazelle, 300,000 zebra, and the highest density of predators anywhere on the planet. Damn!

Welcome to the Great Migration, one of the most sought-after experiences for wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

Pre-packaged-one-size-fits-all safaris litter the internet and can easily be purchased from an endless array of wholesalers, many of which have never even been to Africa, let alone led a group on safari. Lame. Seasick pursued a different and more selective route to conjure up a unique adventure that would satisfy even those who have previously visited the continent of Africa. After a year of itinerary design and negotiations (including prior onsite visits by our African associates), this exclusive safari materialized.

The result: one night in a luxury transit hotel, plus three unique safari properties (for a total of eight nights in the bush). Four separate high-end accommodations spanning 9 nights and 10 days. So, what makes this package “exclusive”? Simple. Seasick’s private group of 28 guests will have sole access at the two primary lodges. It’s called a “buyout” and it eliminates other tourists at the accommodations. That means enhanced flexibility and a higher level of service. Obviously, the primary goal is amazing game viewing, but seclusion and privacy are equally important. Again, this is Africa (not Disney World) and a buyout helps avoid the theme-park vibe.

Craving a hot air balloon ride over the Serengeti? Cool, it’s included.

To summarize: private group, exclusive use of two 5-star camps, peak season, prime location to encounter the migration (those 2 million animals are on the move so it’s all about the right place at the right time), game drives inside a volcano, three commercial flights, and alcohol included in case anyone needs to calm their nerves after witnessing “the greatest show on earth”.

AFRICA

Considered by many scientists to be the origin of mankind, Africa is sometimes nicknamed the Mother Continent. Africa is the world's second largest and second most-populous continent (behind Asia in both categories). It covers about one-fifth of the total land surface of Earth, and it is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the equator. It is made up of 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states. The African continent has approximately 3,000 distinct ethnic groups, and around 2,000 different languages are spoken in Africa.

Africa also boasts of the best flora and fauna in the world. It is best known for the enormous diversity and richness of its wildlife with wild populations of large carnivores (such as lions, hyenas, and cheetahs) and herbivores (such as buffalo, elephants, camels, and giraffes) ranging freely on primarily open non-private plains. It is also home to a variety of "jungle" animals, including snakes and primates and aquatic life such as crocodiles and amphibians. What does that all mean? It means that Africa has the largest number of megafauna (large or giant animals) species of any continent. Africa has over 3,000 protected areas, with 198 marine protected areas, 50 biosphere reserves, and 80 wetlands reserves.

TANZANIA

Tanzania, officially known as the United Republic of Tanzania, is on the east coast of Africa just south of the equator. The country is famous for its great plains, savannas, lush rainforest and the wildlife that inhabit these ecosystems. Tanzania’s most notable natural attractions: the picturesque island paradise of Zanzibar, scuba diving around the Spice Islands (sorry folks, not this time), hiking around Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, and the legendary safari adventures in the world-renowned game reserves. The country’s most acclaimed reserve, Serengeti National Park, is home to over one million wildebeests (not a typo), 300,000 gazelles (give or take a hundred thousand), 200,000 zebras (lots of striped horses), and tens of thousands of other large mammals. Whoa! In addition to the abundance of wildlife, Tanzania is home to more than 120 different ethnic groups and cultures, all living in harmony with one another (most of the time). These groups are culturally distinguished by their unique masks, hand-woven baskets, batiks, poetry and items carved out of ebony or rosewood.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE

Tanzania is vast and its sheer size means that the climate varies considerably within it. However, when generalizing the entire country’s climate and weather it would look something like this: the main rainy season ('long rains') occur during March, April and May while the long dry season (when rainfall is unusual) lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October. During the dry season, temperatures vary dramatically with altitude and location, but it's typically clear skies and sunny weather – often considered the best time to visit Tanzania. Here are some averages for regions and specific areas that are included in the Seasick package.

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK (THE RETREAT NGORONGORO)

Why Lake Manyara National Park? Simple: the tree climbing lions, the soda ash lake that attracts 1.9 million pink flamingos, and one of Tanzania’s biggest elephant populations!

Located in the northern part of Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is 80 miles west of Arusha and covers an area of 125 square miles. Lake Manyara is a shallow alkaline body of water (contains large amounts of sodium and potassium carbonates) that dramatically changes size based on the seasons. It covers an area of 89 square miles which is two thirds of the park’s total area. Lake Manyara has a healthy number of elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, wildebeests, impalas, waterbucks, warthogs, Klipspringers, and the skittish Kirk’s dik dik (horrible name). Although leopards reside in the area, it is the park’s unique lions with their unusual tree climbing capability that garner most of the attention when it comes to big cats. Lake Manyara National Park is one of only two places in the world where lions climb trees. Another attraction is the large number of baboons which can live in sizable troops of up to 200 members.

The road circuit for game drives can be covered in about 3 to 4 hours.

Hey twitchers (nickname for bird watchers), with more than 350+ bird species, Lake Manyara National Park is one of the best places in Tanzania for birding. Large flocks of pelicans and pink flamingos are usually spotted in the middle of the lake. While the spoonbills, egrets, herons, stalks and other waders converge around the edges and water meadows. Other habitats such as the evergreen forests and woodlands serve as a refuge for species such as crowned eagles, crested guinea fowl, and silvery cheeked hornbills.

Lake Manyara National Park Stats: 670 tree species • 4 fish species • 350+ bird species • 1,900,000 flamingos
Regions: Arusha and Manyara • Land Area: 125 sq mi • Established: 1960 • Visitors (2015): 1,277,400 day, 382,400 overnight • Highest Elevation: Khandzalive hill (2,756')

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA (THE RETREAT NGORONGORO)

The main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago, is home to approximately 25,000 large animals, mostly ungulates (large mammals with hooves). Some of the creatures that live in the crater: lions, elephants, hyenas, jackals, foxes, cheetahs, leopards, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, monkeys, baboons, and hippos. The crater has one of the densest known population of lions in the world. The number of predators per square mile is unparalleled and exceeds anything found in the Serengeti, Botswana’s famed Chobe National Park, or even South Africa’s Kruger National Park.

Ngorongoro Crater Stats: Original Volcano Height 14,800' - 19,000' • Crater Rim Elevation 7,500' above sea level • Crater Floor Elevation 5,900' above sea level • Crater Floor Size 100 sq mi • Depth 2,000'
Regions: Arusha • Land Area: 3,202 sq mi • Established: 1959 • Visitors (2017): 601,500 • UNESCO World Heritage Site: Yes

THE RETREAT AT NGORONGORO

In 2004 the owners first thought about building a hotel in Arusha. Many of their clients had saved money for years in anticipation of their first trip to Africa and often asked “Why do so many hotels in Arusha opt for western style décor instead of showcasing African design and culture?” Furthermore, “Why do so many Arusha hotels barely meet the minimum of comforts?”. Those comments were the catalyst to create a lodge in the rural, but breathtakingly beautiful, land of Karatu (90 miles outside of Arusha). Bordering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the barren land was an inspiration to develop the already existing natural, raw beauty and turn it into something more: a retreat, an oasis of sorts. Thus, the idea of "The Retreat at Ngorongoro" was born. Today the vacation property is ranked the #1 hotel in the area on Tripadvisor for over 9 consecutive years. Their mission —accomplished!

Stage one: to bring “life” to this location with an ambitious tree planting project. Over 40,000 indigenous trees were planted. The tree planting did much more than just enhance the already beautiful land; it brought in numerous bird species (hence the bird-themed concept of the lodge), insects and other small animals. Indigenous plants and flowers continue to blossom while their natural garden and orchard produce fruit and vegetables that are served at the Kipepeo Restaurant at the lodge. The Retreat proudly harvests their own honey, roasts their own coffee, and produces their own jams and juices. They have trained and created a livelihood for many people from the surrounding villages via employment such as security personnel, gardeners, housekeepers, waiters and cooks but also financially support the local villages by purchasing provisions such as fresh milk and eggs. Lastly, the owners built a school (5-minute walk from the lodge) and provide education to the village’s children.

Amazing.

THE GREAT MIGRATION

The 500-mile trek of the immense hoofed herd is the largest mammal migration on earth. A better representation of the circle of life probably cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The journey for the key players in the Great Migration, the roughly two million wildebeest, starts in the south of the Serengeti, with the birth of half a million calves between January and March. Predators such as lions and hyenas are constantly hunting for babies, while thousands and thousands of calves are born within a couple weeks of each other – a feast for the eyes of true wildlife enthusiasts. The timing of the migration coincides with greening of nutritious grasses on the short-grass plains during the wet season. These areas are safer because predators can be easily spotted making it an ideal place for calving. When the drought comes in May, the herd moves north, towards the Masai Mara in Kenya, chomping down the high green grass, quickly followed by the gazelles and zebras. The northern extension of the ecosystem has the highest rainfall, but the grasses are least nutritious. This is the dry season retreat for the wildebeest, at least until the south becomes green again. The result is a clockwise movement from the south, west, north, and back to the south. The migration is not without risk: crossing rivers means facing about 3,000 crocodiles, patiently waiting for a kill. Not to mention the famous Serengeti lion population: by far the largest in Africa. Despite the abundance of meat in this area, life is not easy for these big cats in this unforgiving landscape. But seeing a group of lions collaborating to hunt down a wildebeest or gazelle is an unforgettable sight.

Then, with the beginning of the short rains in late October, the migration makes its way back into the Serengeti. By December, the herds trek past Seronera - a small settlement in central Serengeti where the official Serengeti Visitors’ Center is located - to return to their calving grounds again, and the circle is complete.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK (LEMALA NANYUKIE LODGE + LEMALA KURIA HILLS LODGE)

The Serengeti National Park is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world, unequalled for its natural beauty and scientific value, it has the greatest concentration of plains game in Africa. The Tanzania portion of the park (it crosses the border into Kenya as well) was established in 1951. It is home to the most magnificent wildlife spectacle on earth - the great migration of wildebeest and zebra. The resident population of lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, and birds is also impressive. The park covers 5,700 sq miles (that’s larger than Connecticut), with at most a couple hundred vehicles driving around.

The park can be divided into 3 sections. The popular southern/central part (Seronera Valley), is what the Maasai called the “serengit”, the land of endless plains. It’s classic savannah, dotted with acacias and filled with wildlife. The western corridor is marked by the Grumeti River and has more forests and dense bush. The north, Lobo area, meets up with Kenya’s Masai Mara Reserve, is the least visited section. Two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves have been established within the 11,500 square mile region. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth. The essential features of climate, vegetation and fauna have barely changed in the past million years. Early man himself made an appearance in Olduvai Gorge about two million years ago. Some patterns of life, death, adaptation and migration are as old as the hills themselves.

It is the migration for which Serengeti is perhaps most famous. Over a million wildebeest and about 200,000 zebras flow south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then swirl west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. So strong is the ancient instinct to move that no drought, gorge or crocodile infested river can hold them back.

Regions: Mara and Simiyu • Land Area: 5,700 sq mi • Acres: 3,700,000 • Established: 1951 • Wildlife Species: 500+ bird • 70 large mammal • 650+ reptile • 314 plant • Annual Visitors: 350,000

LEMALA NANYUKIE LODGE

Established in October 2018 and located in the renowned Eastern Serengeti, Lemala Nanyukie matches the same outstanding standards of comfort and service as the other properties in the company’s luxury collection, including the Northern Serengeti’s Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge (also part of the Seasick package).

Meaning ‘endless plains’ in the Maasai language, the Serengeti is undoubtedly one of the world’s most celebrated wilderness areas. Lemala Nanyukie is only a 60-minute drive east of the Seronera Airstrip in the park’s central region. This makes it strategically located with outstanding views across these fascinating ‘endless plains’. The camp itself sits on a grassy savanna dotted with rocky kopjes and shaded by ancient giant acacia trees. This area of the Serengeti is crossed by the thrilling wildlife spectacle of the annual wildebeest migration, but also has year-round high-density game-viewing. It is well-known for its large concentration of cats, so much so that until recently this area was set aside for scientific research into predators, especially cheetahs. As such, Lemala Nanyukie is open year-round, and safari activities like game drives and walks will be accompanied by Lemala’s highly knowledgeable and experienced guides.

Seasick has secured a buyout for this property. The entire camp will only be Seasick guests.

HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARI

Seasick included the iconic African experience. A hot air balloon safari offers an opportunity to see the Serengeti from a unique perspective. Gaze upon the wilderness below while silently floating over the vast plains, in whichever direction the wind desires (sounds like lyrics from a Cat Stevens song). Follow a large herd of wildebeest, see a lion stalk its prey, or just marvel at the magnificent scenery before touching down for breakfast out in the wild. If someone was to only take one balloon flight in their life, this is the place to do it. Tissues provided in case any tears are visible (tears of joy, obviously).

LEMALA KURIA HILLS LODGE

Lemala Kuria Hills Lodge is remotely located in the Wogakuria Hills of the Northern Serengeti. A scenic region characterized by grassy rolling hills, open woodland and tree-lined watercourses; it is a habitat that attracts wildlife throughout the year. Lemala Kuria Hills is in close proximity to the Mara River on the Serengeti’s border with Kenya’s Maasai Mara making it within the main corridor of the world-famous wildebeest migration between July and October.

The lodge offers unrivaled luxury and sophistication, where guests can choose to either relax in style or enjoy the Northern Serengeti’s excellent game viewing (without the crowds). Superb guides, open 4×4 vehicles and the “greatest show on earth” is the perfect recipe to leave guests in awe.

There are several dining options at the lodge or out in the bush, and delicious meals include a choice of starters, main courses, desserts and house drinks. Afternoon tea is served before each game drive, and cocktails at sunset are taken on one of the kopjes with distant views of the Isuria Escarpment in the Maasai Mara. The Melengali Spa is in a separate tent where guests can indulge in massages and manicures in a peaceful, natural setting.

Seasick has secured a buyout for this property. The entire camp will only be Seasick guests.
