LA PAZ, MEXICO • OCTOBER 18-25, 2020

ABOUT THE TRIP

Hola Amigos! Want to dive in clear warm water but don't feel like traveling 10+ hours to get there? We have just the answer: La Paz, Mexico located on the Baja peninsula. It’s easy to get to, offers good diving opportunities, has incredible weather and the sunsets are legendary. Since 1997, we have completed over a dozen trips to this area and logged hundreds of dives in the Sea of Cortez. It never disappoints. This trip is a viable option for anyone looking to get salty for several days, hang out with a great group of people, eat some Mexican food and maybe even have a cerveza or two.

We want everyone to have the proverbial "best trip ever." So to help with logistics, overall organization, and answer questions, we are proud to announce that Evan Sherman, Mayra Vargas, and Mike Faust (of Dive and Photo) will be co-leading this expedition. Our team of tour guides will do everything possible to help ensure you have a ton of fun, stay safe in the water and wish you never had to leave this little slice of paradise.

ABOUT LA PAZ

Less than a ten minute drive from the CostaBaja Resort and Spa is La Paz, Capital City of Baja California Sur. With over 481 years of history, the city is rich with culture and diversity. The people of La Paz (“Pacenos”) set the city apart from many others. Helpful, caring, friendly folks who are quick to smile define what La Paz is all about. The Sea of Cortez extends along the Gulf of California from the Colorado River to Los Cabos. “Stunning, breathtaking, pristine” are all words that describe the natural beauty created by geographic contrasts and the immeasurable biodiversity that made Jacques Cousteau refer to this true sanctuary as “the world's aquarium.”

La Paz, or the "City of Peace," has a peaceful energy that emanates from the sea, mountains and natural vibrations that leave you feeling rejuvenated and in harmony with the universe. Venture out into this historical city with its Malecon boardwalk lined with bronze sculptures.

WEATHER AND CLIMATE

La Paz has desert-like climate with very little rain.  Unlike other areas of Mexico, La Paz does not have distinct rainy and dry seasons; it has two seasons: summer and winter.  The summer begins in July and starts to cool down in September with high temperatures between 93-97°F and dew points of 70-73°F.  Winter begins in December and lasts until February with coldest temperatures dropping below 59°F at night.  The Bay provides breezes year-round that moderate the temperature and acts as a barrier against seasonal storms in the Gulf of California.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS

LOS ISLOTES
Depth: 5'-50' (2-15m) • Level: Novice

Los Islotes, best known as the Sea Lion Rookery, is home to a colony of over 300 Californian Brown Sea lions. These playful creatures are accustomed to human visitors and interact freely. The pups might nip at your fins, the females dive bomb you, and the bulls intimidate. All harmless fun after mating season. The site consists of two large rock islets, one of which is a natural arch. Swimming through you will see dense shoals of silver sardines, blue and gold King Angel Fish, and schools of yellow surgeon fish. In the sand, you might even spot a seahorse!

EL BAJO
Depth: 60'-100' (15-30m) • Level: Advanced Open Water

The seamount is located 8 miles from Los Islotes. There are three distinct underwater peaks, the northern most rising to within 83' of the surface, the central peak to within 52' and the southern to within 69'. This is one of the premier dive sites in the world for schooling Hammerhead sharks. As a seamount El Bajo is home to an abundance of sea life, mass schooling fish, octopus. A colony of over 50 Panamic Green morays, we dubbed “Moray City.”

LOS MUELLECITOS
Depth: 20'-70' (12-25m) • Level: Novice

The main feature here is a wall descending to 75' where you can see mantas, several species of moray, octopus, gorgonians, colonial cup coral and large sea fans.

THE SALVATIERRA WRECK
Depth: 60' (18m) • Level: Novice

This site is the remains of the 320-foot long ferry “La Salvatierra,” which sank in 1976 after striking the Swanee Reef. Fish are everywhere along this thriving artificial reef, and with the low current and shallow depth, this massive wreck is ideal for all skill levels.  There are still a few cargo trucks on the bottom and huge propellers.

ISLA BALLENA
Depth: 20'-60' (6-20m) • Level: Novice

Isla Ballena means Whale Island, But it is actually a small island heavily populated by pelicans and seagulls. It is off the west coast of Isla Espiritu Santo and features several dive-through caves one of which has a pocket of air allowing divers to surface inside the rock. Between the islands is a sand shelf containing a large swath of garden eels. The endemic Giant Jawfish lives here.

FANG MING & LAPAS 03
Depth: 70' (21m) • Level: Novice

On November 18th 1999, two Chinese metal vessels named Fang Ming and Lapas03 were sunk close to Isla Ballena. These vessels were confiscated by the Mexican government for the illegal transportation of immigrants. The government turned them into an artificial reef. Allowing full penetration diving over numerous levels, the wrecks offers the ideal setting for indulging in a wreck diver specialty.

LA REYNA
Depth: 80' (25m) • Level: Novice to intermediate

A rock islet just north of Isla Cerralvo, La Reyna, meaning The Queen, is often referred to as The Lighthouse, because it has one. In depths of 80' a large reef is found populated by gorgonians of all types, brain corals, large schools of brightly colored tropical fish, rays, green, zebra and jewelled morays. It is a cleaning station for giant mantas from July to November. This is a “must dive” site!

LA REYNITA
Depth: 25'-100' (8-30m) • Level: Novice

La Renita means Little Queen. This small rock pinnacle located on the west side of Isla Cerralvo has a constant current in which large schools of fish hang in wait for prey. Large groupers, sea fans, brain corals and garden eels are among the attractions.

Note: The dive sites mentioned are just some of the numerous sites we may visit. All dives sites are subject to weather conditions and visited at the discretion of the captain and dive guides.

WHALE SHARK SNORKEL

REQUIREMENTS: Ability to swim
COST: Nada. Included in the dive package and snorkel package

Each year between October and March, whale sharks gather in the Bay of La Paz to feed on the rich plankton. These gentle giants which can reach up to 40' and weigh an average of 10,000 lbs, use mouth filters to feed on the tiny plankton and small fish or eggs. Swimming with the largest fish in the world is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

* This opportunity will be available on several days during the trip. Typically, guests will conduct 2 dives before lunch and then Fun Baja will designate a couple hours in the afternoon to look for whale sharks in the bay.
