BALI, INDONESIA • JUNE 18 - 29, 2018
The Republic of Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world comprising 17,504 large and small tropical islands fringed with white sandy beaches.
Straddling the equator, Indonesia is situated between the continents of Asia and Australia and between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. It is as wide as the United States from San Francisco to New York and has a population of more than 215 million people from more than 200 ethnic groups.
Among the most well known islands are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (formerly Borneo), Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), the Maluku Islands (better known as Moluccas), Papua— and Bali.
Also known as the Land of the Gods, Bali is more than a beautiful island; it is a magical experience with its spectacular mountain scenery, looming volcanoes, lush rainforests and terraced rice fields. Bali enchants with its dramatic dances and colorful ceremonies. It pampers with its luxurious beach resorts. It thrills with its world class diving.
And everywhere on this lovely island you will meet warm and friendly people. With a population of over three million, the island is home to the vast majority of Indonesia's small Hindu minority. The Balinese are a most devout people and a large part of their lives is dedicated to rites and ceremonies aimed at maintaining harmony in this world.
You will love Bali.
Bali's dive sites offer great diversity: vertical walls and sandy slopes, shipwrecks, limestone shorelines and black, volcanic outcrops, peaceful bays and coral-covered ridges. Since we're staying near the dive sites, you can do earlier dives, like the crack of dawn dive when the herds of Napolean Wrasse wake up, and later dives, like dusk and night dives when the even more exotic creatures are seen. It also allows you to do more dives each day. At Scuba Seraya you can do as much shore diving as you can handle. Here are some of Bali's best:
The Liberty shipwreck is considered Bali's most popular dive site. The American ship USAT Liberty was an armed cargo steamship that was torpedoed by the Japanese in 1942. The years under the sea have transformed it to one of Indonesia's most beautiful artificial reefs. Stunning gorgonian sea fans, huge soft coral trees and big-barrel sponges all flourish here. A resident school of big-eyed jacks live on and around the ship and are unafraid of divers, so it's safe to enter the school and have them whirl around you. The ship is also a haven for emperors, batfish, sweetlips and parrotfish.
This is one of the latest ‘discoveries’ among the Tulamben area’s dive sites. It was named by famed underwater journalist and book author Michael Aw after the beachfront Scuba Seraya Resort. The name ‘Seraya’ comes from nearby Mt. Seraya. At Mt. Seraya’s coral encrusted foot lie some of Bali’s most beautiful dive sites. Regulars have divided this dive site into three sub-sites: Noisy Reef, Seraya Secrets and Deep Secrets.
Noisy Reef’s name comes from the huge number of juvenile reef fish that are found here and are known for their endless clicks and clatter and smacking sounds. Schools of juvenile blue Triggerfish flutter in large numbers above the hard coral. At the outer edge at around 12m, the reef turns into a black sandy slope. Large numbers of blue dotted Stingrays congregate here, some of them buried deep in the sand.
Seraya Secrets is known as Critter Heaven. The macro bonanza starts as soon as you are in water just knee deep: Shore crab, juvenile moray eels, lionfish, anemone shrimp, needle shrimp, zebra crab, nudibranch, ghost pipefish, boxer crab, frogfish, mimic octopus, scorpionfish; the list is endless. The rare harlequin shrimp has become the trademark of Seraya Secrets. Some of the larger systems have evolved into cleaning stations where fish such as coral groupers, sweetlips or moray eels have their mouths and gills cleaned by tiny shrimp picking out parasites.
Deep Secrets is a large, busy cleaning station at about 100 feet. It sits on an underwater ridge. Approaching divers can point it out from a distance by a school of Banner fish fluttering above. It forms a sort of mini-reef and hence has several reef fish inhabitants such as Angelfish, Coral trout and Wrasses. This cleaning station often attracts large pelagics.
A cluster of 12 luxurious bungalows lies on Bali's north-east coast, wedged between the sparkling waters of unspoiled Muntig bay and the holy mountain, Gunung Agung. Scuba Seraya Resort is sprawled amongst lush tropical gardens on it's private beach.
Scuba Seraya Resort is now widely regarded as one of NE – Bali's best run dive centers. Being a PADI resort association member, safety and quality are of prime concern. If you look for individual attention, no groups, unhurried service and very small classes, Scuba Seraya Resort and Scuba Seraya Dive are just your ticket! Easy each entries and the resorts purpose-built fast dive boat assure a totally relaxed way of diving.
There is a great variety of critters just in front of the resort. Besides all the known Tulamben and Amed dive sites, we have explored and found many as yet unknown sites in the close vicinity as well as further afield.
